Travelers can reach Nkuringo by road or fly into Kisoro airstrip from Entebbe, followed by a one-hour drive on scenic roads. Though remote, the sector is accessible and well worth the journey.

The Gorilla Families of Nkuringo
Three habituated gorilla families currently reside in the Nkuringo sector. These families are accessible daily to trekkers holding valid Uganda Wildlife Authority permits.
Nkuringo Group was the first to be habituated in this area in 2004. It is one of the most popular families to visit, led for years by the dominant silverback Safari. After his passing, Rafiki took over leadership until his death in 2020. The group continues to thrive under new leadership. This family is known for its long trekking paths but also for rewarding sightings.
Christmas Group was named after the silverback who was born on Christmas Day. It is a smaller group and slightly easier to locate, making it a good option for visitors wanting a slightly shorter trek. The group is peaceful and often feeds near open clearings.
Bushaho Group is a splinter from the Nkuringo family, formed when a few individuals left under the leadership of a silverback called Bahati. It roams between Nkuringo and the southern Rushaga sector, making its trekking paths unpredictable but rewarding. This group often covers new terrain and showcases more of Bwindi’s untouched slopes.
Treks to these families start from the Nkuringo Visitor Center, usually early in the morning. After a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, groups are assigned based on fitness, age, and availability.
How Difficult Is Trekking in Nkuringo?
Trekking in Nkuringo is not for the faint-hearted. Due to its hilly terrain and steep valleys, this sector is considered one of the most challenging in Bwindi. Treks often last between three to six hours, depending on the gorilla group’s location.
However, the terrain also makes it one of the most scenic sectors. As you hike through the forest, you’ll pass misty hillsides, moss-covered trees, cascading streams, and birdlife unique to the Albertine Rift.
Trekkers should come prepared with hiking boots, gloves, long trousers, and a walking stick. Porters are available for hire and highly recommended.

Permits for Nkuringo treks are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and cost $800 per person for foreign non-residents as of 2025. Only eight permits are available per family per day, so booking early is essential.
