Virunga National Park is Africa’s oldest national park and one of its most biologically diverse. Virunga National Park lies in the eastern Congo, bordering Rwanda and Uganda. It stretches from the Virunga Mountains in the south to the Rwenzori Mountains in the north. The closest major city is Goma, just 30 km from the park’s southern gate at Bukima.
The park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which also includes Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga in Uganda.

Gorilla Trekking in Virunga

Mount Nyiragongo Hike (Temporarily Suspended)
Mount Nyiragongo is a massive stratovolcano with a glowing lava lake. The trek to the summit takes about 5–6 hours, followed by an overnight stay in summit cabins.
Note: As of 2025, Nyiragongo hikes may still be suspended due to volcanic activity and security issues. Always check current conditions before booking.
Park Safety and Security
Virunga has faced instability over the years. But the park works with Congolese rangers and partners to ensure visitor safety in designated tourist areas. All treks are accompanied by armed rangers.
It’s essential to book through official channels or licensed tour operators and stay informed of any travel advisories.
Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are ideal for trekking and hiking.
Rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) make trails harder to navigate, but the forest looks greener and has fewer visitors.

Getting There
The easiest route is flying into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, then driving 3–4 hours to Goma via the Gisenyi border. You’ll need a Congo tourist visa, often arranged through Virunga’s tourism office.
