Background and Formation of the Rushegura Group

The Rushegura Group was formed in 2002 after splitting from the larger Habinyanja family. The separation happened peacefully when a strong silverback named Mwirima decided to form his own group. He left with several adult females and a few juveniles to establish what would become the Rushegura family.

The group was named after the “Ebishegura” tree species commonly found in the area where they settled. Today, the Rushegura family remains one of the most stable and frequently visited groups in Buhoma.

Over the years, the family has grown through new births and has maintained a calm and non-aggressive demeanor, even in the presence of visitors.

Where to Find the Rushegura Group

Rushegura is based around Buhoma, the northern sector of Bwindi. What sets them apart is how often they stay close to the park headquarters. In fact, there are stories of the group wandering near lodges or community areas without disturbing daily life.

Because of this proximity, treks to Rushegura tend to be shorter and less strenuous than other families. You might walk for 1 to 3 hours before locating them, depending on where they nested the previous night.

This makes the group especially appealing to older travelers, families, or those concerned about steep hikes.

Group Size and Behavior

Rushegura is a medium-sized group, typically composed of:

  • One or two silverbacks
  • Multiple adult females
  • Several juveniles and infants

The group is led by a dominant silverback who ensures cohesion and protection. Despite being wild animals, the Rushegura gorillas are remarkably tolerant of human presence, often allowing close and peaceful observation.

This relaxed behavior is one reason the group is a favorite among wildlife photographers and first-time trekkers.

You’ll likely witness playful young gorillas swinging through vines, mothers grooming their infants, and the silverback calmly watching over his family. It’s a powerful, humbling encounter.

The Trekking Experience

Trekking to the Rushegura group is typically rated as easy to moderate. The forest trails are well-established, and the terrain around Buhoma is relatively gentle compared to the southern sectors like Nkuringo.

Still, the rainforest is unpredictable—rain can fall at any time, and trails may be muddy. Guides and porters are there to assist you through the terrain.

You’ll start with a briefing at the Buhoma visitor center, followed by a guided trek into the forest. Once the gorillas are found, you’re allowed one hour with them. This is strictly monitored to ensure both gorilla safety and visitor satisfaction.

Who Should Trek Rushegura?

The Rushegura Group is ideal for:

  • Senior travelers or guests with moderate fitness
  • Families with teens or older children
  • Wildlife photographers seeking relaxed scenes

When to Visit

You can visit the Rushegura group year-round. However, the best trekking conditions occur during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. Trails are easier to navigate, and gorilla movements are slightly more predictable.

Still, gorilla sightings are guaranteed regardless of the season, thanks to daily monitoring by park trackers.
