Lake Bunyonyi—Uganda’s Serene Jewel of the Highlands
Nestled in the misty highlands of southwestern Uganda near the Rwanda border lies Lake Bunyonyi, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa.” With its calm waters, dramatic terraced hills, and legendary stories, Lake Bunyonyi is not only one of the most scenic places in Uganda but also a peaceful stopover for travelers trekking gorillas in nearby Bwindi or Mgahinga.

A Lake Steeped in Beauty and Mystery
Lake Bunyonyi, which means “Place of Many Little Birds” in the local Rukiga language, holds the title of Africa’s second-deepest lake, with estimates ranging from 44 to 900 meters in depth. It stretches about 25 kilometers in length and features 29 lush islands, each with its own unique story.
Volcanic activity over 8,000 years ago created the lake, which sits at 1,962 meters above sea level. Its high elevation keeps it free of bilharzia and crocodiles, making it ideal for swimming and canoeing.
Things to Do at Lake Bunyonyi
While Lake Bunyonyi is a place for relaxation, it also offers a variety of cultural and nature-based activities.
Start your day with a traditional dugout canoe ride, which gives you a panoramic view of the terraced hills and islands. One of the most talked-about is Punishment Island, a small, haunting islet where unmarried pregnant girls were once abandoned as a form of tribal punishment.
Visitors can also hike or bike along the lakeshore, visit local villages, or simply unwind at a lakeside lodge with views of sunrise and sunset over the water.
The lake is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 recorded species including grey crowned cranes, herons, and weavers.
Accommodation Around the Lake
Lake Bunyonyi boasts a range of lodges and campsites, from budget-friendly cottages to luxurious lakeside retreats. Most lodges are perched on the hillside or directly on the islands, offering tranquil settings and sweeping views.
Popular choices include Bunyonyi Rock Resort, BirdNest @ Bunyonyi Resort, Crater Bay Cottages, and Byoona Amagara Island Retreat.
Many of these properties offer canoe rentals, local guided walks, and boat transfers to the islands.
Best Time to Visit Lake Bunyonyi
The lake can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons from June to August and December to February offer the best weather for outdoor activities. Early mornings can be misty and magical, while afternoons often bring sunny skies ideal for kayaking or swimming.
How to Get There
Lake Bunyonyi is located just 7 kilometers from Kabale town and about a 2-hour ‘drive from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s Ruhija or Rushaga sectors. It’s also easily accessible from Kisoro or after crossing the Gatuna border from Rwanda.
Private cars or guided tours offer the most flexible transportation, though public transport is available to Kabale, with local motorcycle taxis connecting to the lake.

Lake Bunyonyi is more than just a rest stop—it’s a destination that connects nature, culture, and calm. Whether you’re unwinding after a gorilla trek or planning a romantic escape, its untouched beauty and soothing rhythm make it one of Uganda’s top hidden gems.
