Lake Bunyonyi, which means “Place of Many Little Birds” in the local Rukiga language, holds the title of Africa’s second-deepest lake, with estimates ranging from 44 to 900 meters in depth. It stretches about 25 kilometers in length and features 29 lush islands, each with its own unique story.
Volcanic activity over 8,000 years ago created the lake, which sits at 1,962 meters above sea level. Its high elevation keeps it free of bilharzia and crocodiles, making it ideal for swimming and canoeing.

How to Get There
Lake Bunyonyi is located just 7 kilometers from Kabale town and about a 2-hour ‘drive from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s Ruhija or Rushaga sectors. It’s also easily accessible from Kisoro or after crossing the Gatuna border from Rwanda.
Private cars or guided tours offer the most flexible transportation, though public transport is available to Kabale, with local motorcycle taxis connecting to the lake.
