Buhoma Sector—The Birthplace of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Buhoma Sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It was the first area in Uganda to open for gorilla trekking back in 1993, when the Mubare Gorilla Group was habituated. This sector offers some of the best road access among all the sectors in Bwindi. The journey includes scenic countryside views—tea plantations, crater lakes, and the forested edge of the Albertine Rift.
Buhoma is the most accessible entry point for those coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park, especially the Ishasha Sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions.

Gorilla Families in Buhoma
There are three habituated gorilla families currently trekking in Buhoma:
Mubare Group – This is the oldest habituated gorilla family in Uganda. Named after the Mubare Hills, it started with a small group but has since grown and recovered under the leadership of a new dominant silverback. The treks to this group are usually the shortest and easiest in the region.
Habinyanja Group – Known for its wide-ranging movement across the forest. The group is larger and features interesting social interactions. Treks to this group may take longer depending on the gorillas’ movement that day.
Rushegura Group – One of the most popular families in Buhoma. It split from the Habinyanja group and now stays close to the park headquarters. Treks to Rushegura are often shorter, and sightings are typically up close and relaxed.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority conducts daily briefings at the Buhoma visitor center before assigning guests to different families based on fitness level and interest.
Trekking Conditions in Buhoma
The trails in Buhoma are considered moderate compared to Nkuringo or Rushaga. Some gorilla families, like Rushegura and Mubare, are often found within a 2–3 hour trek from the starting point. The forest here is thick and lush, but the paths are well-cleared and maintained.
Rain can fall at any time, even during dry seasons, so good hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, and gaiters are essential. A walking stick and porter can greatly improve your experience.
Trekking in Buhoma is available year-round. The best months for clear forest views and easier trails are June to September and December to February.
