Detailed Itinerary - 3-Day Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Musanze

Morning / Afternoon – Arrival and Scenic Transfer

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a professional safari guide. After a short briefing, begin your drive north to Musanze, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park.

The 2–3 hour journey winds through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, rural villages, and cultivated landscapes, offering beautiful scenery and insight into everyday life.

Check-in & Rest

On arrival in Musanze, check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch or refreshments. The afternoon is kept relaxed to allow proper rest before trekking activities.

Evening – Leisure or Local Exploration

Spend the evening enjoying views of the Virunga Mountains from your lodge. If energy allows, you may take a short visit to Musanze town to explore local markets and crafts, or simply unwind at the lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Dian Fossey’s Grave Hike

Early Morning – Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a mandatory briefing at 7:00 a.m. Rangers explain trekking rules, safety procedures, and conservation guidelines before assigning you a gorilla family based on fitness and trekking conditions.

Accompanied by expert guides and trackers, you enter the forest to begin your gorilla trek. Trekking duration varies, typically between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Once found, you spend one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas as they feed, groom, and interact in their natural habitat.

Afternoon – Lunch & Rest

Return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest after the trek.

Afternoon – Dian Fossey’s Grave & Karisoke Research Camp

Later in the afternoon, begin a guided hike to Dian Fossey’s grave and the former Karisoke Research Camp. This trek takes approximately 3 hours round-trip and passes through bamboo forest and montane vegetation.

Along the way, your guide shares insights into Dian Fossey’s life, her groundbreaking gorilla research, and her lasting contribution to mountain gorilla conservation. The visit adds historical and emotional depth to your safari.

Evening – Relaxation

Return to your lodge for dinner and a relaxed evening.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking & Scenic Exploration – Return to Kigali

Early Morning – Golden Monkey Trekking

After breakfast, return to the park for golden monkey trekking, an energetic and visually engaging experience. These rare primates live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga slopes and are known for their playful behavior and striking golden fur.

The trek usually lasts 2–3 hours and provides a lively contrast to the calm presence of mountain gorillas.

Late Morning – Choose Your Experience

Option 1: Volcano Hiking
For adventurous travelers, enjoy a half-day hike on one of the Virunga volcanoes, such as Mount Bisoke or Mount Karisimbi. These hikes offer panoramic views, dramatic landscapes, and a strong sense of achievement.

Option 2: Twin Lakes Tour
Alternatively, take a scenic excursion to the Twin Lakes of Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera. This relaxed experience features beautiful crater lakes, birdlife, fishing villages, and peaceful viewpoints—ideal for unwinding after trekking.

Afternoon – Return to Kigali & Departure

After your chosen activity, begin the drive back to Kigali. On arrival, your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your onward departure.
